What are you writing?

A miniature narrative with movement or change.

YOUR FOUR INGREDIENTS

Connect what does not quite belong.

01 · Character

A child who knows too much

02 · Situation

misses the final train home

03 · Detail

a warm key

04 · Turn

Make the final word reverse the story.

Do not use everything literally. Follow the collision that gives you an image, question or change.

No AI is used. Every ingredient was written and edited by a human. The engine only selects and combines them in your browser.

WHY FOUR INGREDIENTS?

A useful writing prompt leaves a gap.

Finished lines invite imitation. These human-written ingredients create friction instead: a person, image or memory meets something it was not expecting. Your job is to decide what connects them and what changes.

You do not need to use every card. Follow the ingredient that opens a question, draft three versions, then change only the final word. The ending that reveals the largest unseen story usually wins.

FROM PROMPT TO SIX WORDS

How to use the six-word prompt generator

01

Choose your form

Select a six-word story, memoir, poem or joke. Each form receives a different set of creative ingredients rather than the same generic prompt.

02

Shape the prompt

Pick a mood, lock the cards worth keeping and reroll anything predictable. The best combination should suggest possibilities, not dictate a plot.

03

Write and compress

Draft the moment freely, find the change, then cut to exactly six words. Use our word-counting rules when punctuation, emojis or hyphens are involved.

Six-word writing prompt FAQs

What is a six-word writing prompt?

A six-word writing prompt is a compact creative starting point for a story, memoir, poem or joke written in exactly six words. This generator supplies four ingredients to combine, question or ignore. It never supplies the finished line.

Does this writing prompt generator use AI?

No. Every character, situation, image, detail and constraint was written and edited by a human. The tool simply selects from those curated ingredients in your browser.

Does my finished story have to use every ingredient?

No. The ingredients are there to create a useful collision. Keep the one or two that spark an idea and discard the rest. The finished six words should feel like your writing, not a checklist.

Can I generate prompts for memoirs, poems and jokes?

Yes. Choose Story, Memoir, Poem or Joke. Each mode uses its own prompt structure, so memoirs begin with memory and meaning, poems with image and texture, and jokes with setup and payoff.

How do I turn a prompt into a six-word story?

Write the interesting moment without counting, identify the change or surprise, keep one concrete detail, then cut until six useful words remain. Test several final words because the ending often changes the whole story.

How are words, punctuation and emojis counted?

The site counts each normal word and each emoji as one word. Punctuation does not add to the count. Contractions, abbreviations and standard hyphenated compounds count consistently under the site rules.

Can I submit what I write?

Yes. Draft privately in Focus Mode or open the full submission form to add an optional name, form and genre. Submission is free and only becomes available when the story contains exactly six words.
