Founded and edited by Doug Weller

Six Word Story was founded and is edited by , creator of Six Word Wonder, its books and the annual international writing contest. Doug built the site to give very short writing a serious, lively home: part publication, part reader jury and part practical guide to the form.

How the site works

Writers submit original six-word work and choose a genre. Readers vote stories up or down, helping the strongest rise through the rankings. New work gets its moment; popular work earns unreasonable levels of glory.

How stories are selected

Community voting helps surface stories that connect with readers. Curated collections add a second layer of editorial judgment, so unusual popularity does not become the only definition of quality. Submissions may be corrected, declined or removed when they are unclear, unoriginal or outside the site rules. Read our editorial standards and ranking methodology.

Our mission

Six Word Story is part reading experience, part writing workshop and part living archive. Our mission is to build the world's most comprehensive collection of six-word stories, poems, memoirs and jokes, collectively known as Six Word Wonders, while helping more people discover, understand and create remarkable writing in very small packages. Read why six words matter, start with the complete introduction to the form or browse the site's writing and teaching resources.

Six Word Story and Six Word Wonder

Six Word Story is a Six Word Wonder community, linked to the established books and annual contest but run as its own destination. The community rankings here are separate from contest judging, and submitting here never enters a story into the contest.

Posting here does not enter a story into the contest. Contest entries are submitted through the official contest page and follow separate eligibility, judging and publication rules. Writers can also browse our broader guide to micro writing and flash fiction contests.
