Genre tells you how. Theme tells you what.
Genre describes a story's broad tradition, such as romance, horror, crime or science fiction. Theme describes what the writing explores, such as family, grief, identity or aging. One story can belong to several themes while keeping one primary genre.
Form is different again: a six-word work might be presented as a story, memoir, poem or joke. These categories overlap because useful literary maps should reflect how people actually read and write.
