What is a six-word joke?
A six-word joke is a joke told in exactly six words. It may imply a scene or character, but unlike a merely funny story, its structure is designed chiefly to deliver a comic turn.
What is the difference between a funny six-word story and a six-word joke?
A funny six-word story is a miniature narrative that happens to be comic. A six-word joke is constructed primarily around comic setup, reversal or punchline. Many pieces do both, but the main test is purpose: if removing the payoff destroys the piece, it is probably functioning chiefly as a joke.

Treat words one to five as pressure and word six as release. The punchline can be a reversal, an unexpectedly literal meaning or a character exposing their own foolishness.
Techniques that work
- Hide the decisive information until the final word.
- Give the speaker a confident but obviously flawed point of view.
- Use a familiar irritation so the setup needs almost no explanation.
Common weak spots
- Using all six words for setup and leaving no turn.
- Depending on a recycled punchline the reader already knows.
- Forcing a pun without giving it a speaker, scene or consequence.

Is every funny six-word story a joke?
No. A funny story may create comedy through situation or voice. A joke normally arranges its words toward a recognizable comic payoff.
Do six-word jokes need punchlines?
They need a turn, but it can be dry, absurd, visual or character-based rather than a traditional one-line punchline.
Can punctuation create the comic timing?
Yes. A full stop, colon or dash can create the pause between setup and turn, but the wording still has to carry the joke.
What is the easiest six-word joke structure?
Try a four-word straight setup followed by a two-word reversal. Once that works, vary the balance and make the voice more distinctive.
Does it still have to be exactly six words?
