Funny Six-Word Stories

A funny six-word story turns a comic situation into a miniature narrative: something happens, changes or goes gloriously wrong. Unlike a six-word joke built mainly around a punchline, each example here still suggests characters and a larger story. Every line uses exactly six words.

My therapist laughed. Progress, apparently, continues.

What makes a good funny six-word story?

The strongest examples often use a familiar situation, then make the sixth word change how the first five are understood. Others rely on character, embarrassment or a wonderfully unreasonable narrator.

USE THESE

Techniques that work

  • Use the first four or five words as a straight-faced setup, then let the ending misbehave.
  • Give the narrator a confident voice, especially when they are obviously wrong.
  • Choose a recognisable nuisance: dating, work, family, technology, food or pets.
AVOID THESE

Common mistakes

  • Explaining the joke after the twist.
  • Using a familiar punchline without adding a new character or situation.
  • Forcing a pun that produces clever wording but no miniature story.

Funny Six-Word Stories questions

Can a six-word story be a joke?

Yes. A joke becomes a six-word story when it still suggests a situation, character or change rather than existing only as a loose punchline.

Does funny mean lighthearted?

Not always. Comic stories can be dry, absurd, embarrassing or dark, provided the laugh is the main effect.

Does a six-word story have to be exactly six words?

Yes. Hyphenated compounds normally count as one word. Titles do not provide a secret seventh word. Nice try.

Can I write and share my own?

Absolutely. Judge a few stories, then use “Write six words” to submit yours. You can also follow the step-by-step writing guide or enter the separate Six Word Wonder Contest.
