What is a six-word poem?
A six-word poem is a complete poetic work containing exactly six words. Line breaks and punctuation can shape its rhythm, but neither creates extra words.
Can a six-word story be a poem?
Yes. A six-word piece can be both story and poem. A story relies primarily on narrative movement: something happens, changes or becomes newly understood. A poem gives greater weight to image, sound, rhythm, metaphor or association. When both are present, choose the label that best describes the piece’s main effect.

Questions about six-word poems
Does a six-word poem have to rhyme?
No. Image, rhythm, sound, metaphor, compression and lineation can all make a poem. Rhyme is one option, not a requirement.
Can a six-word poem also be a story?
Yes. Forms can overlap. The label depends on whether narrative movement or poetic language feels most central.
Do line breaks affect the six-word count?
No. They affect pace, emphasis and visual form, but a word remains one word wherever the line breaks.
Does a six-word poem need a title?
No. A title can add context, but the six-word work should earn its effect without relying on an explanatory label.
Does it still have to be exactly six words?
