What is a six-word story?
A fictional narrative told in exactly six words. Strong examples imply a character, event, change or discovery rather than merely presenting a six-word observation.
Does it have to be exactly six words?
Yes, when it is presented as a six-word story. Near-six forms can still be microfiction, but the exact constraint is part of this form's identity.
Does it need a beginning, middle and end?
It needs the pressure of a before and after, but not three visible sections. Readers can infer most of the arc from one decisive moment.
Must it be a complete sentence?
No. Fragments, lists, dialogue and classified-ad structures can all tell stories if their relationship implies narrative movement.
Can the title contain extra words?
A title can sit outside the six-word body, but it should not supply information the story needs in order to work. Contest and publication rules may differ.
What is the difference between a story and a sentence?
A sentence is a grammatical unit. A story suggests that something happened, changed, was wanted, lost, threatened or newly understood.
Is every six-word phrase a six-word story?
No. Instructions, slogans, observations and descriptions can all contain six words without creating narrative movement.
Counting the six words
Does punctuation count as a word?
No. Commas, periods, quotation marks, colons, dashes, parentheses and other punctuation add no words.
Does an emoji count as a word?
On this site, each user-perceived emoji counts as one word. A family or flag emoji may contain several encoded characters while appearing as one symbol; the site's counter treats the displayed unit as one.
Do contractions count as one word?
Yes. Standard contractions such as don't, I'm and we'll count as one word.
Do hyphenated words count as one word?
Standard compounds such as mother-in-law or long-lost count as one word here. A hyphen cannot be used simply to disguise two unrelated words as one.
Do numbers and abbreviations count?
A number or abbreviation separated by spaces counts as one word, just like another token in the sentence. For example, 2026 is one word and L.A. is one word here.
Does a name count as one word?
Each space-separated part counts separately. Doug is one word; Doug Weller is two.
Do symbols such as & and + count?
On this site, punctuation-like symbols do not add a word. Write the word and if you want it counted. Another contest may set a different rule.
Writing and revising
How do I make six words feel like a story?
Show evidence of change. Pair a before with an after, a desire with an obstacle, an expectation with a reversal, or an action with its consequence.
Where should the twist go?
Often near the end, where it can reframe the opening. But a twist is optional; recognition, tenderness, dread or an unresolved choice can also provide a satisfying turn.
Should I start with a longer story and cut it down?
Either method works. Cutting reveals the indispensable event; drafting directly at six words encourages bolder gaps. Try both and compare the results.
What should I cut first?
Remove explanation, generic adjectives, throat-clearing and facts the reader can infer. Protect the concrete noun or verb that carries the emotional evidence.
How many characters can a six-word story contain?
There is no fixed limit, but one or two implied characters are usually easier to establish clearly. A relationship word such as mother, ex or stranger can create two roles at once.
Does every story need a twist?
No. A turn in understanding is useful, but surprise is only one effect. A strong image, contradiction, confession or emotional aftershock can be enough.
How can I tell whether it is finished?
Read it aloud, verify the count, remove the title and ask what changed. If the central event survives and the ending feels deliberate rather than merely abrupt, it is close.

What is a six-word memoir?
A true or truth-based miniature account of a life, identity or remembered moment. Its contract with the reader is nonfiction rather than invention.
Can a six-word story also be a poem?
Yes. Forms can overlap. A six-word piece may contain narrative movement while also relying heavily on image, sound or rhythm.
What makes a six-word joke?
Its primary machinery is comic expectation and payoff. A funny six-word story may create a comic situation without having a distinct punchline.
Can dialogue work in six words?
Very well. Dialogue can imply speaker, relationship, conflict and situation without explanatory narration.
Can a memoir be fictionalized?
If material changes make it invented, label it fiction. Memoir can compress and select, but it should not mislead readers about its essential truth.
Is a slogan a six-word story?
Not automatically. A slogan aims to persuade or stick in memory; a story needs some evidence of event, character or change.
Is a six-word story the same as flash fiction?
It belongs to the flash-fiction family, but its exact six-word count makes it much more constrained than the flexible category usually called flash fiction.

Did Hemingway write ‘For sale: baby shoes, never worn’?
Probably not. Related miniature tragedies appeared decades earlier, and no reliable evidence connects the familiar wording or wager anecdote to Hemingway during his lifetime.
Who did write the baby-shoes story?
The author of the familiar line is unknown. The responsible credit is anonymous, often misattributed to Ernest Hemingway.
Can six words be copyrighted?
In the United States, the Copyright Office says words and short phrases generally contain too little authorship for registration. A larger collection, surrounding material or trademark may raise different issues, and laws vary by country. This is general information, not legal advice.
Should I credit a six-word story I quote?
Yes. Brevity is not a reason to erase authorship. Credit a known writer and link to the original source; describe uncertain attributions honestly.
